Meet Frost Pocket Press - 2026 Hameware Awardees
The Barn’s new Hamewares Collection has arrived in FOLD, our dedicated craft & design store.
Under the theme Rooted In Craft, this commission invited makers to design a unique product with aim of supporting FOLD customers connect with, immerse themselves in and deepen their relationship to the Barn’s Walled Garden vision through the work of our makers.
Frost Pocket Press were one of two makers awarded the Hamewares Commission, and are made up of artist duo, Cameron Ross and Anna Mitchell. Based in Stonehaven, their name comes from their studio - so called for its location in the northern lee of a brae, which blocks the sunlight from November through to February.
Both Cameron and Anna have many years of fine art printmaking experience, covering the full range of techniques from lithography, etching, relief, intaglio, and screen printing in addition to letterpress. Combined with paper-making and bookbinding there are few things they haven’t turned their hand to over the years.
Frost Pocket aims to maintain the tradition of Letterpress printing. Each print is hand set from their range of unusual wood and metal type, some dating back over 100 years. Every print is hand inked and printed in limited runs. Letterpress is a red listed heritage craft, which Frost Pocket Press are committed to keeping alive with a fresh, creative approach, and a Scottish perspective. Responding to the 2026 Hamewares theme: Rooted in Craft, Anna and Cameron have created a set of 4 letterpress hand-tinted prints, one for each season inspired by an 1853 Almanac for the North East of Scotland, with use of Scots language terms. The posters serve as an aide memoire to the monthly tasks, and seasonal fluctuations, which have not changed in the intervening 173 years. Each print highlights the seasons notable days along with key moments from the Gairdener’s Kalendar such as Solstice, Samhain, Burns Nicht, Imbolc, Huntergowk and Beltane.
The print is traditionally typeset, inked and printed on a Thompson Blue Gem Proofing Press circa 1930. It features vintage metal and woodtype, printed with vegetable oil inks on cotton paper. Each print is a limited edition of 10.
