FOLD is our dedicated retail space at the Barn, presenting the best in contemporary craft and design from established and emerging designer-makers. We represent over 70+ Scottish-based maker designers, and provide a space to shop local, support small makers, and opportunities to experience craft + making through learning opportunities. Â

FOLD grew from the success of our annual craft and design fair, flock, which still runs each year in the lead up to the festive season.Â

CRAFTED brings awareness to specific crafts and themes in collaboration with the maker-designers represented in FOLD. Through this programme we aim to highlight the importance of excellence in craftsmanship, sustainability through materials and practices, and keeping heritage crafts alive.
​
Expect a wide range of encounters through pop-up shops, meet the maker days, try-a-craft sessions, workshops, digital sharing, interviews, blog posts and sharing of opportunities.Â

THE BARN BEAR BY DONNA WILSONÂ
Donna Wilson is textile and product designer from Aberdeenshire. Her distinctive designs are inspired by a love of nature and a passion for craft. Designed exclusively for the Barn, The Barn Bear is wearing a neckerchief made of Home Colours tartan, which was designed by Donna following a commission from Aberdeenshire Council. The colours, inspired by the diverse beauty of the Aberdeenshire landscape, were chosen by pupils from six schools across the area. Â
HAMEWARES BY PLOTERRE
Rebecca uses mathematics and scientific data to create her designs. The Natura Blanket highlights special areas of conservation in Scotland with each square representing a geographical site arranged by grid reference. St Kilda is depicted in the top left and Galloway at the bottom. Horizontal lines represent marine sites and vertical lines represent terrestrial sites. Species on the brink of extinction are highlighted with a solid colour yarn.Â

HAMEWARES BY SARAH DIVER LANGÂ
Sarah's design conveys the concept of time by representing repeating seasons and years. The block pattern shows a human relationship with time and nature - rigid, linear, with an attempt at control.  The back side of the quilts show a deeper understanding of time which is unpredictable and layered. The two sides join by stitches feeding into one another. She was inspired by a visit to the Barn, seeing all aspects of its natural surroundings from the allotments, walled and wild gardens and stunning landscape.  Â
HAMEWARES BY LINDSAY & YOSHI
Lindsay’s designs feature the flora and fauna of Banchory and its immediate surroundings. ‘Dee Lavender’ was inspired by Banchory’s once flourishing lavender trade, ‘River Dee’ presents imagery from childhood walks through the forest in anticipation of the river, while 'James Scott Skinner' captures the joy of our local music and dance traditions. Â
HAMEWARES - KEVIN ANDREW MORRIS
Kevin developed a line of ceramic products inspired by Banchory’s social, environmental and industrial heritage, specifically looking at the recreational and environmental features of community life. Â
​
Kevin's aim was to design and fabricate a collection comprising of a lidded vessel and cup that in part reference whisky and fishing culture in Deeside. The ceramic forms reference the Barns own logo with colour pathways inspired by the surrounding environment.Â

We work with professional Scottish contemporary makers and crafts people who are producing high quality and innovative goods designed and made locally and/or nationally. We champion and support makers who reflect, celebrate, are inspired by their unique location and who advocate sustainable practices. Â

We are interested in ways on how to support makers as they craft their stories and develop their practices through research led/ inquiry driven approaches. FOLD celebrates exceptional contemporary craft across weaving, jewellery, basketry, ceramics, textiles, paper, leatherwork, knitwear, feltwork, woodwork, glass, print, illustration and design. Â
