Exhibitions & Makers Showcases

Health of the Sublime

Upcoming Exhibition:
Health of the Sublime
by Carrie Fertig

25 September - 24 October 2026

Open Thursday - Saturday, 12pm - 4pm

The Gallery at the Barn

Focusing on the links between experiencing the Sublime in the natural world and how this emotional connection impacts our behaviour in protecting the places we love, Health of the Sublime maps our experience of wellbeing in the natural world through the lens of climate change. This body of work has been inspired by workshops, ran as part of the project, on art in nature, writing and poetry, video and audio, and the use of virtual reality.

Alongside this exhibition, the Barn has worked closely with the artist to bring a host of creative workshops which are available to sign up to now.

Makers Showcase:
A Year in Pattern by
Mimi Hammill

8 May – 28 August 2026  | Box Office at the Barn

Open Thursday-Saturday 12-4pm and during events

Surface pattern designer Mimi Hammill draws on the poetic observations of the ancient Japanese micro‑seasons calendar, translating them into 72 fresh, colourful, and lyrically crafted design briefs.

This self-directed pattern design project illustrates the 72 historic Japanese microseasons, with each microseason paired with a colour palette inspired by theatre designer, Sanzo Wada. It took more than two years to complete the pattern design phase of the project.

Mimi Hammill is an Aberdeen-based Scottish surface pattern designer with a background in medicine. Mimi’s signature pattern design style is unapologetically digital, characterised by sharp lines, simplified shapes, and solid blocks of vibrant colour. Her garment; a yukata which is an unlined cotton kimono sewn during lockdown, is currently on display in Aberdeen Art Gallery.

Mimi Hammill’s work can be found in FOLD, our contemporary craft & design store.

Inspired by light, nature and community, Illuminate Together brings together local people of different ages through creative lantern-making activities, culminating in a shared community celebration as part of the Banchory Bonfire & Fireworks Night in early November.

The Far Orchard

In 2022 we introduced The Far Orchard - an imaginative participatory arts project that will develop over many years, building a community based around living systems in a deep and evolving way.

The Far Orchard is a rethinking of the traditional apple orchard where all trees grow together on single area of land. The Far Orchard aims to create an apple orchard which distributed 100 trees across Banchory with individual trees being ‘hosted’ (offered a home) in private gardens, schools, care homes and other places such as allotments. Each tree will be cared for by an individual or family and this community of ‘hosts’ will form the backbone of the project.

This has contributed to disabling barriers to transitioning to giving back to the life web more than we take and giving voices to those who go unheard in the community.

The Far Orchard subtly highlights and echoes the informal networks of care and kindness that have grown up around us and thrived during the last two years. It is a live project that continues to explore how important and life affirming these connections have been, creating a space to think more deeply about how they may be developed and extended, nurtured and made sustainable into the future.

Developed from The Far Orchard project, Plenty Festival is an annual event at the Barn exploring more and less. Based on the idea of a traditional harvest festival, plenty asks what we do with abundance - as sharing may become the most important word in our futures. Plenty festival aims to bring people and communities together to create an abundance of joy, well-being and sharing of collective experiences. It is a space for showing how creativity can be used to explore the world around us and a chance to be part of a catalyst for how we build a more liveable future that will last for generations.

Each year, the Barn invites artists to design an exclusive ware to be sold exclusivley in our dedicated craft & retail store, FOLD. Now in its third year, Hameware, with the theme Rooted in Craft asked makers to create a product which supports visitors in connecting with and immersing themselves in the Barn's vision for the Walled Garden. We are pleased to announce our two awardees:

Anna Mitchell & Cameron Ross – Frost Pocket Press The artist duo are creating four letterpress prints, one for each season – inspired by an 1853 Almanac for the North East of Scotland, with use of Scots language terms. The posters serve as an aide memoire to the seasonal fluctuations, which haven’t changed too much even in 173 years.

Simon Cooper – The Bumbling Basketeer

The Perthshire-based maker is creating brand new Oak Swill Baskets, inspired by the practical containers once used throughout rural Britain for farming, gathering and domestic use, and now a critically endangered craft.

Their commissioned pieces will launch early September and be sold exclusively in FOLD, Craft & Design Store.
