The Hamewares Collection is a range of unique products specially commissioned by the Barn and made by selected designer/makers celebrating the cultural distinctiveness of Royal Deeside and Aberdeenshire.
Local Makers Lindsay Johnston and Kevin Andrew Morris were awarded the inaugural Hamewares Commissions, both makers have strong links with the area and have responded in their own unique way utilising both traditional and modern ways of working with their chosen medium.
Kevin Andrew Morris
Kevin Andrew Morris is a Ceramic Designer working within archival and heritage based projects. His most recent work engages with concepts of craft, material and place, initially motivated by an investigation of his own family heritage and material culture. His current work looks to encourage its audience to consider how they interact with their own habitats, be they man made or natural, as well our collective connections to heritage and tradition.
Kevin’s collection comprises of a lidded vessel and cup that reference both whisky and fishing culture in Deeside as well the Barns own logo. Achieved through traditional and modern means of fabrication and including digital model making and 3D printing as well as creating multiples of each object through mould making and slip casting. Available in Royal Blue, Fir Green, Earth, Lavender, Salmon Pink and white, each piece has been high fired and finished with a digitally printed decal.
Lindsay Johnston
Lindsay Johnston is an illustrator specialising in textile design under her own brand 'Lindsay & Yoshi'. Her inspiration comes from the wildlife that visits at her home studio in rural Aberdeenshire. Each design starts as a hand drawn illustration before being transformed digitally, Lindsay then mixes her own colour palette and adds this to each part of the design and arranges the layout of her illustrations. The designs are then digitally printed in the UK on the finest fabrics.
Lindsay’s collection has encapsulated the essence of the River Dee, Banchory's Lavender Trade and celebrates James Scott Skinner and the Scottish fiddle tradition. The three designs are digitally printed on to fine silk pocket squares and cushions along side a complementary greetings card range. All inspired by my carefully curated 'Deeside' colour palette.
The Hamewares Commissions are co-funded by the Barn, Aberdeenshire Council and Creative Scotland.
