The Barn is very excited to announce that our Walled Garden Project has been selected as a finalist in the Just Transition Fund from the Scottish Government. To vote for our project and help us win this funding, please visit:
Voting closes December 8th at 12pm so please cast your votes before then!
If our bid is successful, the funding from Just Transition will help transform an unused green space at the Barn, into a community-focused garden that celebrates the area’s rural heritage and promotes ecology-based creative learning.
The Just Transition Fund (JTF) helps finance industry and community projects working towards the transition to net zero by creating green jobs, supporting innovation, and securing the highly skilled workforce of the future. Funding is allocated based on the public votes, so please consider voting for us here:
About The Walled Garden Project
Transformed from a disused patch of land, the garden will become a vibrant community hub where people of all ages can get creative outdoors, learn regenerative growing practices, connect with others, and enhance their wellbeing. The garden is already home to a 100-year-old apple tree which will be preserved through the renovation process, while our regeneration of the space will provide homes to a diverse range of bird species. With stunning views of Scolty and Clachnaben, the garden will grow into a thriving, inspirational space for the entire community. Together, we can create a lasting legacy for community, nature, and creativity.
Designed with your thoughtful input, our Walled Garden Proposal by Christopher Palmer Associates reflects the voices of our community and sets out a vision for a Walled Garden that is welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring.
Future Plans
The further development of the Walled Garden will lead to opportunities for volunteering, with community members and local companies invited to get involved in creating a space that will be a fantastic resource for the local community.
The Walled Garden will become a space that supports the Barn’s annual programme, artists and soil ecologists, whilst also hosting targeted projects for vulnerable groups facing social isolation. It will promote well-being, enhance social inclusion, and serve as a community hub for creative and educational activities.
